ACT and EvoS Dates for December 2015

December 2015
Dec 2  6-8ish pm   Evolution Science & Behavior Study Group
The EvoS Group, which usually meets on the 4th Wednesday of each month, will run into holidays both in November and December.  We have decided to have a “split-the-difference” meeting on Wednesday, Dec 2 instead.  The group decided to start a new book, The Storytelling Animal by Jonathan Gottschall, available in paperback, hardcover and audiobook. Please read the intro and chapters xx prior to the meeting.
Dec 7     8-9:30 am   First Mondays ACT Study Group
Topics:  This month we will start our review of The Wisdom to Know the Difference by Kelly Wilson.   We will also spend the latter half of the meeting on case discussion.  Preparation: Purchase The Wisdom to Know the Difference by Kelly Wilson and read the Prologue and Chapter 1.  Bring a substance abuse case to discuss.  For guidance, perhaps  you can bring a case that relates to themes you encounter in the intro and early chapters of Wilson’s workbook.

Dec 14**   8-9:30 am   Third Mondays ACT Study Group
**Due to the holiday schedule, the 3rd Mondays ACT Study Group will meet on 12/14 just this month.**  Oh, baby, we’re off and running!  Topics:  In December we start unpacking Learning ACT by Luoma, Hayes & Walser in earnest.  Preparation: Please read chapter 2 by our meeting date. We will start with summaries of the six core process and their opposites as described in Chapter 1 (refer to figure 1.1 on p. 12 for the “opposites”).  Michelle: Acceptance, Christine: Defusion, Anna: Present Moment Awareness, Jack: Committed Action, Tracy: Values, Katie: SAC.  Mindy and Colin will jointly summarize new concepts introduced in Ch. 2 on Acceptance/Willingness.  Joel will review some of the  client vignettes and other offerings later in the chapter and perhaps use them to unpack some ideas.  In the meantime, scan your clinical cases for examples relevant to Ch. 2 and bring them in for our next meeting.  Going forward, we will plan to discuss at least one case after reviewing chapters.  Extra Credit for the ambitious: Appendix A on learning ACT in group settings.

Dec 18   8-9:30 am   ACT Peer Consultation Group @ MMC Family Practice.  Topics: Recognizing common clinical mistakes in ACT: A quick analysis and call to awareness by Brock et al (2015).  Presenter: Julie Schirmer

Extra:  Therapy PracticeLab!  Groups are forming with plans to meet at two times: 2nd Wednesday of each month (@ 8 am) starting December 9 and 2nd Friday of each month starting December 11.  The 2nd Fridays group will meet @ 8 am just for the first meeting in December and then @ 9 am starting in January.
