AboutJoelGuarna image

I am a clinical psychologist in Portland, Maine. In my early career, I worked as a staff psychologist at the Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in Boston. I specialize in addictions and health psychology, especially treatment of chronic illness and chronic pain, and in specific approaches including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based psychotherapies, and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).

ACT Background

I was introduced to ACT during a day-long training with Steven Hayes in 1999. I have since attended many trainings including one-day workshops with Kelly Wilson and Kevin Polk, a two-day experiential training with Steven Hayes, and many workshops at ACBS world conferences in Philadelphia, London, Chicago, Reno, Washington, DC, Minneapolis, Seattle, and more recently in Montreal and Dublin, Ireland. I have been presenting on ACT since 2005 and have given numerous ACT workshops for healthcare professionals around New England. I currently offer study groups and occasionally offer classes and workshops through my training organization, the White Pine Institute, also in Portland. I currently participate in the ACT Peer Consultation Group and lead ACT Study Groups in Portland.
